Burst and Frozen Pipes
Problems such as burst pipes are associated with freezing
temperatures. The best advice we can give is for owners to
minimise the risk of bursts by taking simple precautions, such as
the following:
Whenever possible, ensure that your property is adequately
heated, and fit draught-proofing where required.
Where possible, have all pipes fully insulated.
If you intend leaving your property unoccupied for a short
period, it is advisable to leave your heating on at a low setting
to maintain a reasonable temperature.
If vacant for a longer period, consider turning off the water
supply and draining the central heating system. Leave a key
and contact number with a neighbour.
Repair any leaking valves or taps.
If a pipe freezes, try gently heating it with an electric fan
heater or hairdryer.
If a pipe bursts, turn off the stop valve immediately. If
water is close to electrical wires or fittings, switch off the
electricity supply. If necessary, turn off your boiler or
immersion heater and drain the system.
